Oral Blending
The aim of this activity is for students to blend sounds orally, without the visual aid of graphemes. By listening to a sequence of sounds and blending them together their ability to recognise and decode sounds sequentially, which is essential for proficient reading.
In this activity, students were explicitly taught how to blend three phonemes (sounds) to form both real words and decodable nonsense words. The lesson focused on developing phonemic awareness by segmenting and blending individual sounds to read simple CVC and CCVC words. Students also practised correct letter formation as they wrote the sounds and words, reinforcing fine motor skills and handwriting fluency. This activity supported students' decoding skills and built automaticity in reading and writing through multisensory practice.
Word Formation & Typing Fluency
The aim of this activity is to enhance students' fluency in both Victorian cursive handwriting and word processing by providing opportunities for them to practice writing words in cursive and typing them on a word processing program, thereby improving their proficiency in both handwriting and digital literacy skills
Vowel-Consonant
Consonant Vowel Blending
Students practise blending two sounds to build fluency with early word parts. Teachers model how to say each sound and blend them together while tracing the arrow. Students then blend independently for 2 minutes, repeating from the top if they finish early. This activity supports oral blending, sound fluency, and decoding skills.
The aim of this activity is to assist students in reading full words by providing visual support through dots placed underneath each sound, facilitating the blending process and strengthening their ability to decode words independently.
Heart Word Practice
Heart words encompass irregularly spelled words such as 'said' and 'have.' The aim of this activity is for students to memorize the word as a whole while also understanding its irregular parts
This activity aims to teach students how to blend individual phonemes together smoothly and sequentially, explicitly instructing them in both additive blending and phonation blending strategies to enhance their reading fluency.
Structured Spelling
Word Chaining
The aim of this activity is to strengthen students' phonemic awareness and word manipulation skills by constructing words using tiles or a whiteboard, then challenging them to transform the original word into a new one by replacing or altering a single sound, thereby reinforcing their ability to recognise and manipulate graphemes within words effectively.
The aim of blending and phonation drills activity is to provide students with opportunities to independently practice and reinforce the skills of additive and phonation blending, enabling them to develop fluency in blending phonemes and enhancing their reading proficiency.
Single Word Dictation
Single word dictation activities, without scaffolds, aim to assess students' independent spelling and phonics skills. This approach helps identify areas needing improvement and reinforces learned spelling rules through autonomous application.
Fluency Games
The aim of the games and activities in this link is to enhance students' fluency in reading single words. Through engaging and interactive exercises, students will strengthen their ability to recognize and decode individual words quickly and accurately, ultimately improving their overall reading fluency.
