GRADE ONE
STAGE 4+ PHASE 1
In Phase One, students are introduced to foundational concepts such as morphemes and doublets for the first time. They learn how morphemes, the smallest units of meaning (e.g., roots, prefixes, and suffixes), and doublets (two identical letters that often represent a single sound) play a critical role in spelling and pronunciation. This phase focuses on helping students hear, articulate, and distinguish specific sounds in words while connecting them to their corresponding letters. By mastering these skills and understanding the rules of spelling and pronunciation for this stage, students build a strong foundation for reading and writing fluency. Phase Two reinforces and extends these skills, supporting students in confidently recognising, articulating, and writing the sounds and letters of this stage with automaticity.
