Oral Blending
The aim of this activity is for students to blend sounds orally, without the visual aid of graphemes. By listening to a sequence of sounds and blending them together their ability to recognise and decode sounds sequentially, which is essential for proficient reading.
In this lesson, students learn that every syllable contains a vowel sound. By identifying vowel sounds in words, they practise breaking longer words into syllables to support accurate decoding and fluent reading.
Single Word Dictation
Single word dictation activities, without scaffolds, aim to assess students' independent spelling and phonics skills. This approach helps identify areas needing improvement and reinforces learned spelling rules through autonomous application.
The aim of blending and phonation drills activity is to provide students with opportunities to independently practice and reinforce the skills of additive and phonation blending, enabling them to develop fluency in blending phonemes and enhancing their reading proficiency.
This spelling activity supports students in reading and writing multisyllabic words by applying the doublet spelling rule. Students learn to break words into syllables and identify when to double the final consonant of a syllable ending in a short vowel followed by f, l, s, or z, or other consonants when adding suffixes like -ing. Through guided practice, students develop a stronger understanding of syllable structure, vowel sounds, and how spelling patterns help maintain correct pronunciation in longer words.
Word Formation & Typing Fluency
The aim of this activity is to enhance students' fluency in both Victorian cursive handwriting and word processing by providing opportunities for them to practice writing words in cursive and typing them on a word processing program, thereby improving their proficiency in both handwriting and digital literacy skills
The aim of this activity is to assist students in reading full words by providing visual support through dots placed underneath each sound, facilitating the blending process and strengthening their ability to decode words independently.
Structured Spelling
Heart Word Practice
Heart words encompass irregularly spelled words such as 'said' and 'have.' The aim of this activity is for students to memorize the word as a whole while also understanding its irregular parts
Word Chaining
The aim of this activity is to strengthen students' phonemic awareness and word manipulation skills by constructing words using tiles or a whiteboard, then challenging them to transform the original word into a new one by replacing or altering a single sound, thereby reinforcing their ability to recognise and manipulate graphemes within words effectively.
Doublet Game
This engaging game helps students practice the Floss Rule by identifying double consonants (ff, ll, ss, zz). Players roll the dice, move across the board, and read words they land on, reinforcing phonics and spelling skills. A fun and interactive way to learn while racing to the finish line!
Fluency Games
The aim of the games and activities in this link is to enhance students' fluency in reading single words. Through engaging and interactive exercises, students will strengthen their ability to recognize and decode individual words quickly and accurately, ultimately improving their overall reading fluency.
