Oral Blending
The aim of this activity is for students to blend sounds orally, without the visual aid of graphemes. By listening to a sequence of sounds and blending them together their ability to recognise and decode sounds sequentially, which is essential for proficient reading.
Reading Non-Words
This activity helps students apply their phonics knowledge by decoding non-words—made-up words that follow regular spelling patterns. Because these words are unfamiliar, students must rely on their understanding of grapheme–phoneme relationships rather than memory. This builds decoding accuracy, reinforces sound–letter knowledge, and strengthens reading fluency with real and unfamiliar words alike.
Reading Multisyllable words with suffixes
The aim of this activity is to assist students in reading full words by providing visual support through dots placed underneath each sound, facilitating the blending process and strengthening their ability to decode words independently.
Single Word Dictation
Single word dictation activities, without scaffolds, aim to assess students' independent spelling and phonics skills. This approach helps identify areas needing improvement and reinforces learned spelling rules through autonomous application.
Word Formation Fluency
The aim of this activity is to enhance students' fluency in Victorian cursive handwriting by providing opportunities for them to practice writing words from the stage they are working.
Analysing Words
Students are shown words with the target sound. They identify the focus sound in each word and match it to the grapheme that represents it. This builds sound–letter knowledge and spelling awareness.
Word Chaining
The aim of this activity is to strengthen students' phonemic awareness and word manipulation skills by constructing words using tiles or a whiteboard, then challenging them to transform the original word into a new one by replacing or altering a single sound, thereby reinforcing their ability to recognise and manipulate graphemes within words effectively.
Heart Word Practice
Heart words encompass irregularly spelled words such as 'said' and 'have.' The aim of this activity is for students to memorize the word as a whole while also understanding its irregular parts
